The Loreto Sisters established a school for girls in Milford in 1966 with 41 students and then the following year Loreto College became the first co-educational Convent School in Ireland.
The status of the school changed from a Secondary School to a Community School in 1996 when the Department of Education and Skills purchased the school and its extensive grounds from the Loreto Sisters.

The building of a new school was completed and opened in September 2006 and serves quite an extensive catchment area comprising of the Rosguill and Fanad Peninsulas, Milford, Kilmacrennan, Rathmullan and Ramelton.
