Transition Year

Transition Year

The Transition Year Programme in Loreto Community School has evolved over the years since it was first introduced in the school in 1993. Initially seen as a developmental programme, the school has adapted it over the years in response to student, staff and parental input.

The main area of change in the past centred on ongoing concerns about the lack of academic focus in the initial programme. The ‘doss year’ tag was difficult to shake off in those early years. However, in response, the school moved to re-introduce an academic focus to the Programme and has settled on a blend of both developmental and academic.

In Loreto Community School there has been a steadily increase in numbers in students doing TY. At present there are 4 classes of TY (96 students). The current TY Co - ordinator is Ms. R. Boyle.

Aims of Transition Year at Loreto Community School

  • To give students a broad education experience free from exam pressure, new subjects, new experience which the Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert don’t provide.
  • To introduce students to the world of work. To give them opportunities to research career options, plan for the future and set realistic goals.
  • Promote the personal and social development of each student so that they can become confident, responsible and well adjusted adults.
